inadequate evidence of efficacy of omega-3 supplements for MDD

A recent Cochrane review found insufficient evidence for efficacy of omega-3 supplements for treatment of major depressive disorder when compared with placebo or antidepressant treatment.

Given that omega-3 fatty acids are NOT active against CVDs as well,

is it high time to rethink our approach to omega-3 supplements?

Is is time to move on and re-design NEW supplements?

Οι μέρες δύσκολες...πώς να πεις αντίο σε φίλους καλούς που κάναμε τόσα χρόνια στην Ελλάδα; Πώς να τους αφήσεις πίσω χωρίς την σκέψη σου μαζί τους;

"c u soon" , "au revoir" .

flavour and "best before" dates: enemies?

[from the Guardian, a letter that I fully agree with]

I write as a retired food technologist who spent many years working in the food industry. Joanna Blythman’s article (Food labels have passed their sell-by date, 5 November) is the first sensible article on this subject that I have ever seen in the media.

The legislation which at first insisted that food had a “sell by” date started as a very laudable way of ensuring that retailers could not pass off old food as fresh. Enforcement agents (environmental health officers) could easily initiate prosecutions against cheats. However, more detailed good intentions soon led to “mission creep”, and with the introduction of “use by” and “best before” dates turned also into guidance to food consumers as to how to control the contents of their larders.

At that point, people ignorant of the nature of food preservation were soon throwing away perfectly good food. For example, cheddar cheese only improves with age, but like all food it has to have at least a “best before” date. And yoghurt is fundamentally a safe food due to its acidity, yet someone doing risk analysis has decided it is possible for mould to grow on it – and some moulds develop toxins, and so it must have a “use by” date; yet most yoghurt is perfectly safe to eat months after being out of date, and if it has got a mould growing on it, only the most desperately hungry would eat it because it would both look and taste horrible. As a result of the coding, though, out-of-date yoghurt is likely to be thrown away completely unnecessarily.

an amazing story...how to survive against all odds

this is a story, a story of a man lost in sea.
A story that can teach us so many things, on survival, thirst for life, pollution, fishing...and so on.

Hope you like it.

p.s. and here is a film on the same theme that you may enjoy it... I watched it the last day of 2013 in IMAX, Bradford and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.

beyond the sea

You may have noticed that this blog has a new photo at the top. The change of the photo is to signal the change of orientation of the sailing route of this blog.

I started this blog straight after the big fatal forest fires in Greece in the summer of 2007...Now, some 8 years later, the blog is still here, alive and kicking but my view of the world is somehow different.

I am moving away from the topics that I used to report (pollution, cross-contamination of the food chain, heavy metals) here...

I am moving towards functionality of food components, with a special interest in Lipids.

Most posts are going on food functionality, obesity, cardiovascular diseases but also social factors that affect the onset of diseases and our health.

And the (towards the North West) Journey begins...
Destination: Limerick, Ireland.

new paper on dairy products

(just published at "Dairy Science and Technology")

Evaluation of the in vitro anti-atherogenic activities of goat milk and goat dairy products

Abstract

Given that goat milk and dairy products should be consumed daily according to suggestions based on Mediterranean diet, the current study evaluates the anti-atherogenic properties of goat milk and goat dairy products (yogurt and white cheese). Total lipids (TLs) of all three samples were extracted by the method of Bligh and Dyer and further separated into total polar lipids (TPLs) and total neutral lipids (TNLs) by counter current distribution. The fatty acid profiles of TPL and TNL of all three samples were determined by gas chromatography analysis. TL and TPL were tested to determine whether they induce platelet aggregation or inhibit platelet aggregation induced by the platelet-activating factor (PAF). The most active lipids were found in goat white cheese (i.e., since they showed lower IC50 values in both TL and TPL samples than corresponding fractions of goat milk and goat yogurt), so the TPL of goat white cheese were further separated by preparative thin-layer chromatography (TLC). The obtained polar lipid fractions after TLC separation were also tested for their biological activity. All the samples’ lipids, and especially the polar ones, were found to exhibit strong anti-atherogenic activities. This fact highlights the nutritional value of goat dairy products in terms of cardioprotection, as PAF is a crucial inflammatory mediator that is implicated in the mechanism of atherogenesis.

What’s best for Cardiovascular Diseases?

First published in International Aquafeed, September-October 2015

In my May/June article, some of the latest data on the functionality of statins and fish lipids against Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) were given. The story goes on and some related developments are given below.

In the US, an FDA advisory panel has voted at the beginning of June to recommend approval of two new injectable cholesterol-lowering drugs that work differently than statins. These two drugs, Praluent by the drug company Sanofi and Repatha from Amgen, are a class of drugs known as PCSK9 inhibitors. These drugs block the PCSK9 protein in the blood, which allows the body to more effectively reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol.

Two articles claiming cholesterol-reducing statins may be unsafe are to be investigated and could be retracted by the British Medical Journal. The authors have withdrawn figures suggesting up to 20 percent of users would suffer harmful side effects such as liver disease and kidney problems.

Given that about seven million people in the UK at risk of heart disease are prescribed statins, experts fear the articles, which were widely reported in October 2014, will have discouraged people from taking them. British Medical Journal (BMJ) editor-in-chief Dr Fiona Godlee said last May it was publicising the withdrawal of the sideeffects figures "so that patients who could benefit from statins are not wrongly deterred from starting or continuing treatment because of exaggerated concerns over side effects". But the scientific question: how severe are the real side effects of statins?

On the other front, for example, the one of consuming fish instead of statins, the news is encouraging:

Eating fatty fish, such as salmon, herring and mackerel, at least three to four times a week has been shown to boost levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lessen the risk for cardiovascular disease, according to a study published in the journal PLoS One.

In a relevant recent research announcement, Australian researchers have found that fish oil supplements do not protect against heart disease with the evidence suggesting that eating fish is of greater benefit to the heart. Researchers examined the benefit of fish oil supplements for the hearts of healthy people and those who have had a heart attack and are taking the supplement to prevent further episodes.

The study, which has been published in the Heart, Lung and Circulation Journal, has prompted the National Heart Foundation to review its guidelines on fish and fish oil supplements. The Foundation said it shows higher fish intake is consistently associated with lower rates of sudden cardiac death, stroke, heart failure and heart attack. It is urging all Australians to eat two to three servings of fish a week, including oily fish.

The evidence is clear and the news for the Aquaculture society is rosy! Eating fish protects better against CVDs (and without side effects) than any current drug at the moment! Plus, fish has a pleasant flavour!

inflammation, obesity and diabetes

http://www.sciencemag.org/content/339/6116/155

UN goals on diet-related disease will fail to be met because of the soaring numbers of people becoming obese or overweight, with almost 1 billion of the world’s adults projected to be obese by 2025, analysis shows.

Further to this worrying news, parents tend to fail to recognise obesity or overweight in their children.

Today, there is strong scientific evidence that inflammation, obesity and diabetes type II are interlinked.(see also here).

Therefore, our current research efforts are focused on how to inhibit inflammation and all its knock-on effects.

anchovies and aquaculture

Yesterday, I was writting about the aquaculture sustainability and how it depends on sardine oil.

This news can not, thus, be shocking, this suspension was deemed necessary in order set to safeguard the resource stock.

Overfishing is still though a huge problem, a problem that needs urgent solutions. More info on the issue of marine oils and their bio-availability  is given at chapters 1 and 3 of the book "Marine Oils, from Sea to Pharmaceuticals" by my colleagues Mags Crumlish and Tony Bimbo.

on the value of sustainable farming

ASC-certified salmon is on sale in mainland Europe, but is not currently being stocked by UK supermarkets. Photograph: ASC

A recent article on the Guardian wonders
"Is it OK to eat farmed salmon now?".

Well, of course it is. From a safety point of view, farmed fish are safer than wild ones, since in aquaculture HACCP and ISO22000 are applied.

From a sustainability point of view, now aquaculture is trying to become more aware of the bigger picture and to address the paradox we have there.

The paradox is this: we need FishOil (FO) to make fish feeds to produce fish. At the moment, we are (over-) fishing wild sardines to get FO. If numbers of sardines go down though, how can we have FO?

This is a major issue we need to address. Some ideas have been described here and here.

New paper on sardine and cod liver oil

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to compare the biological activities of total polar lipids (TPL) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) polar lipid fractions of sardine fillet and cod liver oil against atherogenesis. TPL and TLC polar lipid fractions obtained from these two sources were assessed for their ability to inhibit the platelet-activating-factor (PAF)-induced platelet aggregation (PAF-antagonists) or to induce platelet aggregation (PAF-agonists), since PAF plays a crucial role in the initiation and development of atherosclerosis. This study focused on the polar lipids since previous studies have underlined that the antithrombotic properties of foodstuffs are mainly attributed to polar lipid micro-constituents. TPL of sardine fillet induced platelet aggregation, while TPL of cod liver had a bimodal effect on platelets. TLC polar lipid fractions of both samples exhibited in vitro aggregatory and inhibitory activity towards platelets. However, TLC sardine polar lipid fractions showed stronger in vitro antithrombotic activities than the cod liver oil ones. These data constitute evidence of the putative contribution of fish polar lipids against cardiovascular diseases, underling firstly the beneficial effect of fish and fish lipids as functional foodstuffs against atherogenesis and secondly the more important role of sardine polar lipids as opposed to cod liver oil.

Sustainable functionality of Lipids

Here there is a realy good article on activities of omega-3 acids and some related issues.
The relevant scientific paper is here.

Apart from flux/uptake, I would suggest that we need to take into account the cardioprotective activities of polar lipids  but also their sustainability.

In this way, we can work towards increased food security but also sustainable functionality of lipids.

for Helena Smith, Athens correspondent of the Guardian

Ms Helena Smith, for us living in Athens, your article is miles away from the true value of Meimarakis. The guy is somehow non-existing...He wants to collaborate in order to defuse responsibility. His party, ND, has NO PLAN of action and most importantly they can't persuade any more millions of Greeks who have voted for them in the past.

The biggest problem today is that Syriza has similarly betrayed lots of people...And many people will not go to vote next Sunday...There is no clear plan by any party...

That's the biggest drama emerging for Greek people who are on the verge of poverty, unemployed for years and desperate for some hope, either "conservative" hope or "leftist" hope...

Sorry for being critical but the situation here, as you perfectly well know, is so critical, beyond any good looks and common sense of any Meimarakis...

farewell to Aylan and Ghalib and their mother Rehan

Good Bye Dearest Aylan, Ghalib and Rehan!

Aylan Kurdi, left, and his older brother, Ghalib. Photograph: Twitter

This "european" "society" was not ready to accept you...

You see, here in Europe we don't really care about Syrian war and its casualties.

Here in Europe, we are very introvert. We want jobs and good salaries. That's all.

In order to make money, we produce weapons and army officers... These humans and these machines are the main causes of the Syrian catastrophe that your father/husband tried to rescue you from...

It is quite tragic that your family's application to enter Canada was rejected.

It is rather tragic that many European politicians think that by building a wall they could divert refugees.

It is quite hypocritical though...when the same political parties are, one way or another, behind the catastrophe in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria...

The west divides and reigns...
But not anymore...

With so many souls drowned in Mediterranean Sea, like you, the Erinyes should make the sleep of the governing politicians much less comfortable...

Good Bye Aylan, Ghalib and Rehan.

this is a "War" for a good reason!

http://www.functionalfitmag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Sugar-vs-obesity.jpg

Delighted with this piece of news!

Just what the doctor ordered: Jamie Oliver declares war on sugar

It is interesting to pay some attention on how the food industry reacts...

" Ian Wright, a spokesman for the Food and Drink Federation, told the Grocer magazine: “It’s up to parents to decide what kids watch and what they eat and it’s certainly not up to self-appointed but ill-judged characters like Jamie Oliver.” He further argued that the Oliver manifesto would be a “curtailment of freedom and personal responsibility. The world will have gone mad if we have a TV chef deciding health policy. What’s next, would we have economic policy decided by Ian Beale?” It’s a silly thing to say. Ian Beale (from EastEnders) is a fictional character for starters, but Wright is worth quoting in full because it illustrates the type of backlash Oliver can expect when he wades into this territory."

- - -

in Europe today, overweight people is one of most important problems that needs to be addressed in an effective and holistic way.
Being overweight/ obese can cause Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes type II, and these diseases are affecting millions of people today (eg. in UK the most recent data are here )

So, good on Jamie for his "war" against Sugar!

A constructive way forward though would be to work all together (Academics and Industry) to make these drinks and those sweets more healthy, more nutritious, with less simple sugars, more complex sugars.

Let's try to substitute sugar but at the same time keep the flavour... Not easy but not unfeasible!

on the value of education, training and more education

When I was a teenager, I have been training for 2 years at sprints. Since then (1987,1988) I had a disgust for doping (Ben Johnson era was then) and the dubious former USSR and US athletes with extra big muscles...
Since then, I could not understand how some countries can produce again and again good sprinters.
Here is an insight on how Jamaica trains and educates young people.

Here is an extract

"Behind me, the bleachers were a heaving, swaying mass of people, chanting, cheering, singing, dancing and banging drums. They included children, parents, mothers with babies; and there was a constant buzz, like a billion mosquitoes – vuvuzelas. Officially, the crowd was 30,000, the old venue’s seated capacity, but it was a river in spate, poised to burst its banks and spill on to the track.
The occasion was Champs, Jamaica’s secondary schools’ athletics championships. That’s right: schools. This Premier League-sized crowd was watching schoolchildren run, jump and throw. But mainly run, extremely fast"

Enjoy the reading and keep running! It makes you feel good!

Πώς θα ξεκινήσει λοιπόν τον άλλο μήνα, ανακύκλωση στην πηγή, όταν ο παραγωγός του σκουπιδιού δεν ξέρει ακόμη τον τρόπο;

That's life.
