today's posting has a title with 3 words...one wrong, one OK and one ...predictive.
the flu is here and all over the place. It is spreading with amazing vitesse...another proof that today the world's economy and ...politics are completely globalised so any communist party anywhere in the world is simply out of touch.
The flu virus though is not ...swine!
So, the second word is wrong!
It has not been linked to any pigs, swine whatever you call the pig...or pork :)
Scientifically, we should call this virus with a name based on its origin, i.e. central America since it started from Mexico, or even Mexico-flu-virus-strain-09 (as we found it accidentally on 2009!).
And thirdly, the word ..."pandemic" is predictive and possibly exaggerating. This case is not pandemic yet and it may never become one!
As pandemic means
"prevalent throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world; epidemic over a large area", this case of this Mexico-flu-virus-strain-09 flu is NOT prevalent in such a huge area so to be called pandemic...
Journalists may call it whatever they want but Scientists should be a bit more low profile...
Finally, I am utterly dissapointed from the scare that is spreading to people. A scared person is a sign of a misinformed citizen. An hour ago, the teacher of my son asked me if it is OK to go to UK in...July...
I do not blame the teacher, but I wonder what are UN, WHO, EU and all this posh-bluddyUSELESS-abbreviations of bureaucrats are doing to inform in time ?
The virus is like any other flu virus, we do NOT need to carry masks... we simply need to follow extremely carefully the good hygiene practices (good wash, not messing with noses and mouths, not unnecessary kissing).
Let's use our common sense, please!
Enough of the WHO-UN-EU bullshits...
Last but not least, pork is 100,000 % safe to eat as long it is cooked properly, i.e. for 10-15 mins over 72 degrees C.

@datura - agree wholeheartedly.... I posted this on SJ's article but is just as relevant to this 'blog'.....
It seems to me that overfed and coddled nations have quite simply become risk averse to an extreme.
Our children cannot play a game of conkers in case they gouge each others eyes out, or be allowed to have fun sliding on the ice covering the school playground in winter in case they suffer injury etc. Any medium sized gathering has to have costly public liability insurance in case of......... well just in case of anything at all really..... Even the WI jam makers have to watch out.....
On and on it goes. We're turning into a pathetic bunch of worriers,, incapable of taking responsibility for ourselves, but offloading it onto a nanny state.
Yes, we must take sensible precautions against potential hazards, but I am starting to wonder has our species any common sense left.
work colleague just came into my (not generously venitlated) office and (somewhat selfishly imo) coughed. hand was placed marginally in front of face but I did notice gaps in between some of the fingers - is this dangerous?
in the absence of official government guidance (no leaflet yet) and unsure what correct procedure was, I held my breath and swatted the air enthusiastically directly in front of my face for some long moments.
am now sweating (more than usual) and slightly concerned these sweats might be the onset of some kind of fever - is it possible this thing could be so virulently instant?
would like to call nhs directly but am worried they would just confirm my suspicions and hole me up in some kind of office cupboard quarantine.
wholeheartedly in favour of these blogs - they may well become the only safe way to communicate with my family in due course.

Είμαστε ζώα σταβλισμένα και κομπάρσοι σε μία διεθνή υπερπαραγωγή της Νέας Τάξης. Τρώμε πλέον όλες τις αηδίες που μας σερβίρουν. Αυτό είναι αδιαμφισβήτητο γεγονός, που βαθιά μέσα μας το γνωρίζουμε και το έχουμε αποδεχθεί όλοι, ή σχεδόν όλοι. Η συστηματοποίηση της χειραγώγησης των μαζών έχει γίνει καθεστώς και προκειμένου να επιτευχθεί ο μέγιστος αριθμός των «γουρουνιών» που θα «τσουβαλιαστούν», χρησιμοποιούνται όλα τα μέσα.
Δεν μπορώ να γνωρίζω που αποσκοπούν οι νοσηροί εγκέφαλοι που ανακαλύπτουν και εφαρμόζουν με τέτοια προσήλωση τις τακτικές αυτές, αλλά μου είναι αδιανόητο να συνεχίσω να συγκαταβαίνω στην «μαζική πλύση εγκεφάλου» που μας επιβάλλουν οι «άρχοντες» του πλανήτη αυτού. Αυτή η υπόθεση με τις ασθένειες που ξεκινούν ως επιδημίες και επανειλημμένα μας έχουν απειλήσει ως πανδημίες, κοντεύει να γίνει ανέκδοτο για μικρά παιδιά. Θέλετε η ασθένεια των πτηνών, θέλετε η ασθένεια των αγελάδων, τώρα η ασθένεια των χοίρων, έχω την εντύπωση πως για πολύ ζώα μας περνάνε κάποιοι. Ζώα που θέλουν να μας σταβλίσουν και να πάψουμε να κυκλοφορούμε ελεύθεροι…
… Η οικονομική κρίση δεν έφερε ίσως το ζητούμενο ποσοστό άγχους και πανικού και οι «επιτήδειοι» επιστράτευσαν ΚΑΙ τον θανατηφόρο ιό!!! Είναι σκοπός τους ο εγκλεισμός των ανθρώπων και η παύση κάθε κοινωνικής δραστηριότητας; Και αν ναι, γιατί; Είναι σκοπός τους η παύση ύπαρξης ζώων, η παύση χρησιμοποίησή τους για εκτροφή και η μετάβαση σε άλλες «έτοιμες» πηγές τροφής; Μήπως σκοπός είναι οι «τρελές» πωλήσεις tafimlu (οι κακές γλώσσες αναφέρουν πως «υψηλά πρόσωπα» είναι βασικοί μέτοχοι της εταιρείας παραγωγής του συγκεκριμένου εμβολίου…) και ο υπερπλουτισμός κάποιων συγκεκριμένων «αξιωματούχων» κυβερνήσεων;
Γεγονός είναι, πάντως, πως η εμφάνιση αυτών των «θανατηφόρων ασθενειών» που έχουν πολλά κρούσματα αλλά όχι τόσους πολλούς νεκρούς, καταφέρνει να εξαναγκάσει μεγάλα πληθυσμιακά τμήματα σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη, να υπακούουν σε εντολές που «βγαίνουν» από τις κυβερνήσεις, οι οποίες με τη σειρά τους ζητάνε οδηγίες από τους «αρμόδιους»… Φαύλος κύκλος δηλαδή, μιας και κανείς δεν γνωρίζει ποιος τελικά δίνει τις οδηγίες και από που (πραγματικά) ξεκίνησε το κακό, από το οποίο οι πολίτες καλούνται να προστατευθούν επιδεικνύοντας «τυφλή εμπιστοσύνη»…
… Δεν μου αρέσει να συνωμοσιολογώ, αλλά το όλο «σκηνικό» μου έρχεται πολύ στημένο και νιώθω πως πρέπει να το πω: Οι προ μηνών ρήσεις μερικών «σπουδαίων πολιτικών» της ανθρωπότητας (ανάμεσα στους οποίους έτρεξε να συμπεριληφθεί και ο «δικός» μας Πάγκαλος), περί ανάγκης παγκόσμιας κυβέρνησης (ή διακυβέρνησης), μου έρχονται ιδιαιτέρως ανησυχητικές στη μνήμη. Κι αυτό, επειδή, μόνο κάτω από έναν μεγάλο ή διεθνή-παγκόσμιο κίνδυνο θα δεχθεί η ανθρωπότητα να βρεθεί υπό τον έλεγχο μίας παγκόσμιας κυβέρνησης. Αν μέσα σε όλα αυτά σκεφθώ και όλα όσα κυκλοφορούν για το 2012 και τους κινδύνους που έρχονται… τότε είμαι σχεδόν βέβαιος πως οι σημερινές ειδήσεις έχουν παιχτεί (και με επιτυχία μάλιστα) σε πολλές Χολιγουντιανές κινηματογραφικές παραγωγές… μόνο που στην συγκεκριμένη «παραγωγή» των νεοταξικών “παραγωγών” οι κομπάρσοι είμαστε εμείς!

30 April 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 17:00 GMT, 30 April 2009, 11 countries have officially reported 257 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection.
The United States Government has reported 109 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 97 confirmed human cases of infection, including seven deaths.
The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (19), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (8).
Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.
WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.
There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.
